Activities in 2007

The Finnish All-Party Parliamentary Group organised a seminar on "HIV-prevention: Update on Global and Finnish HIV-situation and New Preventive Techologies" in October 24 together with Väestöliitto, the Family Federation of Finland.

The seminar concentrated on global HIV and AIDS situation as well as the situation in Finland. Dr. Frans van den Boom from the Internation Aids Vaccine Initiative and Dr. Zeda Rosenberg from the International Partership for Microbicides rendered latest information on prevention means of HIV. In addition, the importance of extensive and comprehensive prevention was also discussed in the seminar.

The program of the seminar
Professor Mika Salminen from National Public Health Institute of Finland gave an overview of HIV situation in Finland.
HIV adviser Heli Mikkola from Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs gave an overview of the global HIV situation.
Dr. Frans van den Boom from International AIDS Vaccine Initiative informed of the latest developments in the AIDS vaccine field.
Dr. Zeda Rosenberg from International Parnership for Microbicides told about microbicide development and its challenges.
Ms. Hilkka Vuorenmaa from Väestöliitto emphasized the importance of all-inclusive HIV prevention.

On May 15, the Group organised a seminar "Halfway towards the UN Millennium Development Goals - The Role and Responsibility of the Parliamentarians in Finnish and the European Union's Development Policy" for the newly elected Parliament together with Väestöliitto and the UN Association of Finland.

The purpose of the Seminar was to introduce the Millennium Development Goals and their midterm review, and to discuss the new development policy programme of Finland. Also the role of the MPs as development policy actors was discussed.

As the Seminar was targeted for new Parliamentarians, different Parliamentary Groups, such as the Human Rights Group, were introduced.
