Every year more than 500 000 women die of pregnancy-related causes. 90 % of maternal deaths occur in developing countries, especially in Africa and Asia. In Sub-Saharan Africa, where most of maternal deaths occur, only 46 % of the newborn are delivered with the assistance of professional staff. Approximately 14 million of 15-19 year old girls give birth annually. Complications related to pregnancy are the most common cause of death among 15-19 year old girls. 76 million uninteded pregnancies occur every year in developing countries. 45 million of these pregnancies end in abortion. 19 million of these abortions are unsafe causing the death of approximately 78 000 women.
