General facts about population
- In 2010, world population was about 6,9 billion. According to UNFPA estimates, world population will reach 7 billion by the end of 2011 and 9 billion already in 2050. Population growth occurs mainly in developing countries.
- 82 percent of the world population lives in developing countries and 800 million in least developed countries. About one fourth of the world population lives in extreme poverty.
- At the moment, half of the world’s population is under 25 years old.
- In 2010, youth unemployment increased globally to 13 percent, meaning that over 80 million young people lacked official employment. In addition to this, there are millions of young people living in working poverty. Youth unemployment is a serious problem especially in developing countries, where young people are a relative majority of the population.
- Illiteracy is more common among women than it is among men; on a global scale, 11,8 percent of men and 21,1 percent of women are illiterate.
